Making your own furniture is extremely cost-effective, especially when it comes to minimal designs such as benches, bed frames, or side tables.

There are plenty of DIY tutorials and helpful videos to get you started on making your own furniture, but there's one thing that it seems like no one ever covers or talks about and that's connecting joints without the use of screws or nails, typically in decorative pieces when you don’t want to see metal bits. Recently we stumbled across a carpenter's genius method for creating these metal free joints, and his hack is brilliant, check it out.

The instagram channel behind this simple and helpful video is account handle @thebestwoodworkplans. As their name suggests for the account they share all things woodworking, building, carpentry, and design ideas for home and professional builders and crafters. Their account is quite popular, reaching nearly 50 thousand followers on their just shy of 500 posts.

To create strong joints that do not require the structural use of nails, screws, or other metal holdings the man first cuts two notches in the joints so they create a locking point sitting in one another. He glues the joints together and then on the opposite cut he drills two holes into the boards and pounds wooden dowels into them. He fills the top with wood glue and sands it down to make a flush match with the two boards.

Strong, secure, and seamless.
